Spray Foam Insulation

Facts About Foam Insulation

Insulation Toledo specializes in Spray Foam insulation. Foam Insulation, Sprayed In Insulation or just Sprayed Insulation), is an alternative to traditional building insulation such as fiberglass. Spray foam insulation saves on energy costs and lowers utility bills. It often provides a better seal and our Spray Insulation is backed by a LIFETIME warranty! Spray foam insulation can often be several times (3-4 times!) more expensive than fiberglass, or cellulose insulation. Foam is used to insulate about 10% of existing homes.  Spray foam can be the best energy conservation choice in extreme climates. It has a very high energy efficiency R-value in a limited space. Spray foam insulation is excellent for sealing cracks, holes and seams, eliminating air leaks. It can can also be sprayed as a retrofit on attic interiors and under floors. Insulation contractors can use spray foam to retrofit walls. The foam is installed by injecting it into wall cavities through small holes. Selecting the best foam insulation depends upon several factors. There are basically two different types of spray foam: closed cell and open cell.

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell foam is denser and has a higher insulation value: R-6.2 per inch of thickness. It also provides a barrier against air and moisture.  As you might expect it is more expensive than open cell spray foam.

Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell foam could be a great choice. Although it provides a barrier to air, it does not provide a moisture barrier. So open cell foam is not to be used for structures below ground because the moisture within the soil can be absorbed into the insulation. Although it doesn’t have as high of an insulation value as closed cell, open cell spray foam has a respectable insulation value of R-3.7 per inch of thickness. And it is less expensive than closed cell to. (More information about insulation materials.) One thing to be aware of “shrinkage.” Over time, spray foam has a tendency to shrink away from the areas that it’s applied. This is especially true in areas that have extreme changes in temperature. When this happens, gaps can appear allowing air to escape. Also, spray foam can only be applied at certain temperature levels. These are all factors to consider and why it’s important to work with trained, spray foam insulation contractors.

NOT recommended as a “Do-It-Yourself” project!

A wide range of spray foam insulation products are available. Be advised however, most are made from petroleum, but some now have a substantial percentage of soy ingredients. While foam insulation has become popular because of its unique ability to expand and its appearance of being ‘high-tech,’ there are other facts that should be considered. The three most important factors of residential insulation are: R-value, Safety and Cost. Because of the wide range in spray foam insulation products and training required, it is important to select a qualified insulation specialist like Insulation Toledo.
